With great pleasure we introduce Chris Ege, our Northeast Aglow President. It is our sincere desire that her testimony bring to your attention the power, love, and care of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Moreover, may each one of you be inspired and encouraged, regardless of how insurmountable your circumstances may seem. It is no accident that you are reading through these pages. We encourage you to open your heart, browse our site, and feel the Lord’s love for you—yes, you!
Sensitive to God at an early age, Chris began to ask Him for a powerful testimony when she was in college. God immediately set about making sure that she had one! She suffered from anorexia and bulimia for many years and ultimately gave up hope of getting better. Miraculously, she had two children and became pregnant with a third, in spite of the fact that her female cycle only rarely functioned. During the third pregnancy, God delivered her of numerous bondages and healed her from eating disorders. Two more children followed. Meanwhile, she and her husband Steve had become actively involved in a Bible-believing fellowship in Norway, where they lived for several years. The training they received there sustained them through many battles with the enemy, various trials, tests, and wilderness experiences after they moved back to Texas. Through the wilderness experiences, God made Himself known in a deeper way and firmly established their foundation. Chris has been involved with Aglow since 1984 and currently serves as president of Houston Northeast Aglow. She has also served in various leadership capacities in the local church over the years. She has a passion for helping others to understand that God desires to transform pain and bondage into release, healing, and freedom.
God’s Call To Aglow
I never intended to be involved with Aglow. In fact, I had never even heard of Aglow. The last thing I was interested in was getting involved with a group of women. Most women, in my opinion, were two-faced, superficial, and insincere. However, it is amazing what can happen when God gets involved. We were living in Norway, and a couple of my friends were meeting with some other women every so often to pray about beginning an Aglow group in our city there. Since my friends were meeting for this purpose, I went along for the ride. There were a couple of slightly bizarre, fanatic ladies at the meetings, but my friends seemed to think they were OK, so I put up with them! I might add that these women were from a variety of churches and a variety of nations — Canada, the U.S., Norway, and Trinidad. At these organizational meetings, the Holy Spirit moved in ways I had never seen before. Some aspects of our times together frightened me, but I felt reasonably safe with my three friends there. At least I wasn’t by myself with an entire group of weirdos! Also, the presence of God was very powerful during the songs we sang together, just a cappella, women’s voices. I was skeptical but intrigued.
Deliverance and Healing
One particular day, I had to attend the meeting alone, as my friends were all otherwise engaged. I really wanted to be there for the worship and prayer, in spite of my misgivings. I also desperately needed a touch from God. During the worship that morning, one of the women suddenly moved toward another lady in the group and began praying for her. I peeked at the clock and realized I had to leave in fifteen minutes to pick up my children from the babysitter. I knew that I, too, needed prayer, but I didn’t want to ask anyone. I told the Lord that I needed prayer but He had fifteen minutes to do something about it. Suddenly, right after my silent prayer, I felt someone in front of me. Of COURSE it was the fireball from Trinidad, the one who scared me the most! She began to pray, and I immediately forgot all about her and my discomfort. I felt transported to the feet of Jesus, who was seated on a throne. I felt covered in liquid love and overwhelmed by His presence. Suddenly the prayer was over, and I had to leave. I felt filled with inexplicable joy. I knew God had done something. I picked up my boys, then drove to my husband’s office so he could drive us home and have the car for the afternoon. The transformation was evident — my behavior was noticeably unusual! My husband asked me where I had been. I simply smiled and answered, “A Bible study!” This joy rendered me semi-intoxicated for over three weeks. Needless to say, I began to lose my skepticism about the power of the Holy Spirit.
With God, All Things are Possible
Over the next several months, the meetings got moved to my house, which was the most centrally located. Although I knew the Holy Spirit was doing something important, I felt unworthy, inadequate, and condemned, as I was in bondage to anorexia and bulimia, powerless to overcome, and riddled with guilt and fear. The meetings continued in my home, and I felt so inferior and hypocritical. Praise God, He had other plans! He knew I would have quit attending those meetings in shame, had they not been held at my own house! In the meantime, I was involved in an Aglow Bible study with a small subset of these same women. I finally got the courage to ask about my sense of being held captive to eating disorders. It became clear that I needed deliverance. In the meantime, a couple of my good friends fairly browbeat me into joining them in attending my worst nightmare: a women’s conference for Aglow! However, God met me there and began a mighty deliverance, which was followed up with some personal prayer and counseling with a couple of Aglow women after we got back home. After 18 years of bondage, Jesus had worked a miracle, and I was free! Needless to say, I was involved in that first Aglow group when it began meeting officially as Aglow in that city in Norway. I ended up speaking for that group, taught the Bible study regularly, and often interpreted the meetings into Norwegian (for the Norwegians) or into English (for the English-speaking Brits, Americans, Canadians, and Sri Lankans in our multi-national group).
Joy of Today
My journey with Aglow began in 1984, and I have continued to be involved in Aglow ever since. God has blessed me with many friends through Aglow and has taught me many key spiritual lessons. I am so grateful to Him for this ministry and count it a privilege to be a part of a network that truly reaches across national boundaries and connects hearts to God and to one another. It is one of the few organizations where women from different backgrounds and different churches form such authentic relationships. I pray that Jesus will use Aglow women to bless you in some specific way!
