“O you afflicted one, tossed with tempest, and not comforted. Behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems, and lay your foundations with sapphires. I will make your pinnacles of rubies, your gates of crystal, and all your walls of precious stones.” Isaiah 54:11-12
These verses promise us that God will transform our tempest into His treasure. He will give us beauty for ashes (Isaiah 61:3). He will rebuild our walls. He promises that our ruins will be rebuilt, our desolations raised up, and our ruined cities repaired — even desolations of many generations (Isaiah 61:4). In fact, He also promises to fill our empty places, as He declares that the desolate cities will be inhabited (Isaiah 54:3). God declares in Isaiah 60:18 that violence will “no longer be heard in your land, neither wasting nor destruction within your borders; but you shall call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise.” These verses demonstrate that Jesus Christ Himself will be our Foundation and our Walls, for He is the chief Cornerstone (Psalm 118:22) and our Foundation (“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” I Cor. 3:11). He promises to establish HImself in us and restore our broken places such that we radiate His glory and beauty. We are individually, in miniature, a foretaste to the world of what the heavenly Jerusalem will be like at the consummation of the ages. In Revelation 21, verses 10-27, John gives a magnificent description of the City of God. “The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones, the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.” (Rev. 21:18-23) This same beauty and glory has been promised to us, as God’s holy habitation. His Holy Spirit dwells in us from the moment we make Jesus our Lord. He is the foundation of our life, the source of our very breath. He will replace our devastated places with qualities of inestimable value that reflect His nature, the DNA of God Himself. We are to become a house from which His beauty and glory shine forth. He uses everything precious and valuable to build us according to His pleasure; in fact, He uses His very own self, sacrificed for us. We can trust Him to transform us!
